About Acupuncture

The principles of acupuncture have developed over thousands of years. The fundamental theory is that illness and pain occur when the body's "qi" or vital energy cannot flow freely.

This can affect physical, mental and emotional well-being.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles at specific points on the body, with the aim of restoring equilibrium. Because the needles are so fine, most people find that acupuncture is not painful - they might experience some sensations such as tingling or electricity, or some people report feeling a deep ache. This indicates the arrival of "De Qi" - a positive sensation.

Acupuncture aims to treat the whole person, rather than a specific symptom or Western disease. As such it can be effective for a range of conditions.

Acupuncture can be used effectively in conjunction with conventional medications.

What to Expect at Your First Acupuncture Appointment

Your initial acupuncture session with Mati lasts around one hour. Before this appointment, a full health assessment is required to understand your overall wellbeing and main concerns. This can be completed over the phone or by filling out an online questionnaire.

During the first part of your appointment, we’ll discuss your primary concern, your health goals, and any other relevant details. If you are currently taking any medication, please bring a list with you to your first visit.

Once enough information has been gathered to make a diagnosis, you will be invited to lie comfortably on the treatment bed, and your acupuncture session will begin. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing to allow easy access to acupuncture points on your arms and legs.

Follow-up sessions typically last between 45 minutes and one hour. During your treatment, your pulse may be taken and your tongue examined to provide further insight into your body’s balance and overall health.

What does acupuncture feel like?

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine – so fine that the prick of the needle as it goes through the skin is barely felt. As the needle begins to have an effect on your energy, you may feel an unusual sensation – like a numbness or tingling.

Needles are frequently left in place during an acupuncture treatment for up to twenty minutes, depending upon the effect required. The needles come sealed in individual packs and are used once only, then disposed of.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments will depend on many factors, including age and constitution. I should be able to give you a good idea of roughly how many treatments you should consider when we first speak.

Everybody is different, and people respond at different rates. However, you should expect to start making progress in two to three treatments.
